Do you often find yourself working away from home, perhaps in a cafe, library, or a co-working space with limited access to power outlets? If so, you know that relying solely on your MacBook’s built-in battery can be risky. While Apple claims that the MacBook Pro offers “10 hours” of battery life, real-world usage often tells a different story.

Battery longevity varies based on several factors, such as the age of your device and the type of tasks you’re performing. For example, casual web browsing will consume far less battery than intensive gaming or video editing. And let’s face it, when deadlines loom, you can’t afford to be hunting for an outlet.

That’s why a portable battery, also known as a power bank, is an essential accessory for anyone who works on the move. In this guide, we’ll explore the top portable batteries designed specifically for MacBooks, breaking down their features, advantages, and drawbacks to help you make an informed choice

1. Screen Protector

In my view, screen protectors are crucial. They are not just needed for mobile phones, but also for laptops. Each time you shut the laptop, the keys can gradually leave a mark on the screen. So, it’s better to use a screen protector to prevent these marks from becoming permanent.

Even though the 15-inch MacBook Air 2023 is a recent model, there are already plenty of screen protectors available for it. Here are a few options you can consider.

2. Cleaning Cloth

If you don’t want to use a screen protector on your new MacBook Air, a cleaning cloth can be a good substitute. You can use it to wipe off smudges or dirt from the screen. Additionally, you can place it over the keyboard before closing the laptop to prevent the keys from leaving marks on the screen.

Clean Screen Wizard ($19.99)

This is a dark-colored microfiber cloth that is 14 inches in size. It’s perfect for use with a 15-inch MacBook Air.

3. Keyboard Protector

Another simple way to prevent marks on your MacBook’s screen from the keyboard is to use a keyboard cover. These are usually made of silicone and fit perfectly over your keyboard. They not only reduce the noise when you type, but also protect your keyboard from spills or food crumbs.

Boost Your Wi-Fi: Simple Steps to a Stronger Signal https://www.hongkiat.com/blog/boost-wifi-signal/ Wed, 14 Jun 2023 13:01:39 +0000 https://www.hongkiat.com/blog/?p=67328 Improve your Wi-Fi performance with our practical tips. Discover how to secure your network, adjust antennas, and upgrade your equipment.

The post Boost Your Wi-Fi: Simple Steps to a Stronger Signal appeared first on Hongkiat.

]]>
Whether it’s for work, online learning, gaming, or streaming your favorite shows, a strong Wi-Fi signal ensures a smooth and seamless online experience. But, what if your Wi-Fi isn’t up to the mark? Issues like slow internet speeds and dead zones can transform your digital haven into a frustrating ordeal.

living room router

In this guide, we will explore practical and effective ways to boost your home Wi-Fi signal. From correctly positioning your router to upgrading your equipment, these simple yet impactful steps can significantly enhance your Wi-Fi performance.

1. Position Your Router Properly

The placement of your router significantly influences the strength and reliability of your Wi-Fi signal. Here are some tips to optimize your router’s position.

Central Location

Wi-Fi signals spread out in all directions from the router. Hence, placing your router in a central location in your home ensures that the signal reaches as many areas as possible.

router central location

For instance, if your home is two stories, consider positioning the router on the first floor near the middle of the house, allowing the signal to reach both the upper and lower floors.

Elevated Position

Wi-Fi signals tend to spread out and down from the router. Thus, placing your router in an elevated position, like a high shelf or mounting it on a wall, can extend the signal’s reach.

For example, if your router is currently on the floor, consider moving it to a high shelf.

Away from Obstructions

Walls, furniture, and other physical obstructions can weaken your Wi-Fi signal. Aim to position your router in an open space where the signal won’t be blocked. Avoid placing your router inside obstructive locations, such as a cabinet or closet.

Away from Interference

Other electronic devices can cause interference with your Wi-Fi signal. Make an effort to keep your router distanced from devices like microwaves, cordless phones, baby monitors, and Bluetooth devices.

For example, if your router is currently next to your microwave in the kitchen, it would be beneficial to move it to a different room.

Away from Metal Objects

Metal objects can reflect Wi-Fi signals and cause interference. If your router is situated near a large metal object like a filing cabinet or refrigerator, it would be beneficial to relocate it to a different location.

2. Update Your Router’s Firmware

Firmware is the software that is embedded in your router. It controls the device functions and provides the means for your router to connect to the internet. Manufacturers often release firmware updates that can improve the performance and reliability of your router, add new features, and fix security vulnerabilities.

Here’s how you can update your router’s firmware:

Identify Your Router’s Model and Version

You’ll need to know the exact model and version of your router to find the correct firmware. This information is usually printed on the router itself, often on a sticker on the bottom or back of the device.

router printed information
Image: hellotech.com
Visit the Manufacturer’s Website

Once you have your router’s model and version, go to the manufacturer’s website. Look for a section like “Support” or “Downloads“.

Linksys router support page

Here are some common router manufacturers with links to their support and download page.

Find the Firmware

On the manufacturer’s website, look for your router’s model and version. There should be a section for firmware updates. Make sure you download the correct firmware for your specific model and version.

Update the Firmware

The process for updating the firmware will vary depending on the router. Usually, you will need to access the router’s settings by typing the router’s IP address into a web browser on a device connected to the router. Then, you’ll need to find the firmware update section and upload the firmware file you downloaded.

If you have a Netgear router, you would go to the Netgear website and navigate to the “Support” section. From there, you would find your specific router model and download the latest firmware. Then, you would access your router’s settings by typing http://www.routerlogin.net into a web browser, enter your username and password, and navigate to the “Advanced” and then “Administration” section. From there, you can click on “Firmware Update” or “Router Update“, click “Choose File” or “Browse“, select the downloaded firmware file, and finally click on “Upload” to update the firmware.

3. Change the Wi-Fi Channel

Wi-Fi signals operate on various channels. Your router communicates with the devices in your home using a specific channel. If multiple devices or networks use the same channel, it can result in congestion, subsequently slowing down your Wi-Fi. Changing the channel your router uses can alleviate this congestion.

Here’s how to change your Wi-Fi channel:

Identify the Best Channel

To begin with, you need to identify the optimal channel for use. Various apps and tools can analyze the Wi-Fi channels in use in your vicinity and recommend the most suitable one. For instance, Wi-Fi Analyzer is a well-known app for Android devices, capable of accomplishing this task.

Wifi Analyzer
Image: WiFi Analyzer / Google Play Store
Access Your Router’s Settings

To change the channel, you have to access your router’s settings. Typically, this is done by entering the router’s IP address into a web browser on a device connected to the router. The IP address is often imprinted on the router itself or can be found in the router’s manual.

Change the Channel

Once inside your router’s settings, navigate to the Wi-Fi settings. There, you’ll find an option to change the channel. Select the channel you previously identified as optimal and save your changes.

If you’re using a Linksys router, access your router’s settings by typing http://192.168.1.1 into a web browser. Following this, enter your username and password. Navigate to the “Wireless” section and then to the “Basic Wireless Settings” section. Here, you can change the “Wireless Channel” to the one you identified as the best one and then click on “Save Settings“.

4. Use a Wi-Fi Extender or Mesh System

A Wi-Fi extender (also known as a Wi-Fi booster or repeater) is a device that can boost the Wi-Fi signal from your router into areas of your home that the router can’t reach.

A mesh system, on the other hand, uses multiple routers (often called nodes) to create a network that covers your entire home.

TP-Link Deco AX3000
TP-Link Deco AX3000 WiFi 6 Mesh System / Amazon

Here’s how you can use these devices to boost your Wi-Fi signal:

Wi-Fi Extender

First, identify the areas in your home where the Wi-Fi signal is weak. Then, place the Wi-Fi extender halfway between your router and the weak signal area. The extender will pick up the signal from your router and rebroadcast it, boosting the signal into the weak area.

Wifi Extender
TP-Link AC1900 WiFi Extender / Amazon

For example, if your router is in the living room and the Wi-Fi signal is weak in your bedroom, you could place the extender in the hallway between these two rooms.

Mesh System

A mesh system is a more comprehensive solution that can cover larger areas. You place the main node in a central location and connect it to your modem. Then, you place the other nodes around your home. The nodes communicate with each other to create a single, strong Wi-Fi network. For example, if you have a three-story house, you could place one node on each floor.

Google mesh system
Mesh system / Google

Both Wi-Fi extenders and mesh systems come with instructions on how to set them up, which usually involves connecting them to your existing network and configuring some settings. Some devices also come with an app that guides you through the setup process and helps you find the best locations to place the devices.

The effectiveness of these devices can vary depending on factors like the size and layout of your home, the quality of your internet service, and the type of router you have.

It’s also worth noting that while these devices can boost your Wi-Fi signal, they can’t increase the speed of your internet service. If your internet service is slow, you might need to upgrade your service plan or switch to a different internet service provider.

5. Upgrade Your Equipment

If your router is old, it might not be able to handle the demands of modern devices and applications. Upgrading to a newer model can significantly improve your Wi-Fi signal and speed.

Identify Your Needs

The first step is to identify your needs:

 • How many devices do you have?
 • Do you do a lot of streaming or gaming?
 • Do you have a large home that needs a wide coverage?

The answers to these questions will help you determine what kind of router you need.

Choose a Router

Once you’ve identified your needs, you can start looking for a router that meets them. If you have a lot of devices and do a lot of streaming or gaming, you might want to look for a dual-band or tri-band router. These routers can handle more devices and offer faster speeds.

dual band vs tri band router
Left: Dual-band router. Right: Tri-band router.

And if you have a large home, you might want to consider a mesh system, which can provide better coverage.

Set Up the New Router

Once you’ve chosen a router, you’ll need to set it up. This usually involves connecting it to your modem, turning it on, and then configuring the settings. Most routers come with a quick start guide that will walk you through the process.

Connect Your Devices

After your new router is set up, you’ll need to connect your devices to it. This usually involves selecting the router’s network on your device and entering the password.

For example, if you have a 5-year-old single-band router and you’ve recently started working from home, you might find that your Wi-Fi is slow and unreliable.

Upgrading to a dual-band router can provide a separate network for your work devices, reducing congestion and improving speed and reliability.

The best router for you depends on your specific needs and circumstances. It’s always a good idea to do some research and read reviews before making a purchase.

6. Secure Your Wi-Fi

Securing your Wi-Fi network is crucial for your privacy, safety, and maintaining a good internet speed.

Change the Default Login

Routers come with a default username and password that are often easy to guess. Changing these is one of the first things you should do when setting up your router.

Enable WPA3 Encryption

Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) is a security protocol that encrypts the data on your network. WPA3 is the latest and most secure version. Enabling WPA3 can help protect your network from unauthorized access.

Set a Strong Wi-Fi Password

Your Wi-Fi password is another line of defense against unauthorized access. It should be strong and unique.

Disable WPS

Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) is a feature that allows you to connect devices to your network by pressing a button or entering a PIN. However, it can be a security risk because it’s easy to guess the PIN. Disabling WPS can help make your network more secure.

Create a Guest Network

If you often have guests who use your Wi-Fi, consider creating a guest network. This is a separate network that allows your guests to connect to the internet without giving them access to your main network.

guest network

The steps to perform these actions can vary depending on the router. You’ll need to access your router’s settings, which is usually done by typing the router’s IP address into a web browser on a device connected to the router.

7. Use a Wired Connection

While Wi-Fi is convenient, it can also be slower and less reliable than a wired connection. Devices that require a lot of bandwidth, such as gaming consoles or streaming devices, can benefit from being connected directly to the router with an Ethernet cable.

Identify Devices

First, identify which devices might benefit from a wired connection. These are typically devices that use a lot of data or need a very stable connection. Examples might include gaming consoles, smart TVs, desktop computers, or streaming devices like a Roku or Amazon Fire Stick.

Get an Ethernet Cable

You’ll need an Ethernet cable to connect your device to the router. These cables come in different lengths, so make sure to get one that’s long enough to reach from your router to your device.

Connect the Device

Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into a free port on the back of your router, and plug the other end into the Ethernet port on your device. This would provide a more stable and faster connection than Wi-Fi, which can be beneficial for online gaming.

Remember: Using a wired connection might not be feasible for all devices or in all situations. For example, it might not be practical to run a long Ethernet cable across your home to connect a device in a different room. In such cases, improving your Wi-Fi signal or using a Wi-Fi extender might be a better option.

8. Adjust the Antennas

If your router has external antennas, adjusting them can help optimize your Wi-Fi signal. The antennas send out signals in all directions, so their position can affect where the signal goes.

3-antenna router

Here’s how you can adjust your router’s antennas:

Vertical Position

If your router has one antenna, it should be positioned vertically. This will spread the signal horizontally around your home, which is ideal if your devices are located on the same floor as the router.

Multiple Antennas

If your router has two antennas, positioning them perpendicularly (one vertical and one horizontal) can help cover a wider area. This is because some devices receive signal better horizontally, while others receive it better vertically.

Directional Antennas

If your router has directional antennas, you can point them in the direction where you need the most coverage. For example, if your router is located at one end of your house and your devices are at the other end, you could point the antennas towards your devices.

Remember, every home is different, so you might need to experiment with different positions to find what works best for your specific situation. Also, keep in mind that while adjusting the antennas can help, it won’t solve larger issues like a router that’s too old or an internet plan that’s too slow.

As a hobbyist photographer who is always on the go, I’ve been using my iPhone SE2 and Sony a6400 with a Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 lens for quite some time now, along with my octopus tripod since it is really convenient to bring, but it comes with a clear limitation as far as tripods for photography go

That said, I’ve been searching for a sturdy, lightweight. Compact tripod that’s easy to carry around, and the SANDMARC’s iPhone Tripod caught my eye because of several reasons. It was initially recommended to me, so I figured there must be something to it.

Anyway, I decided to try it, and now I’m sharing my thoughts with you all. So, let’s dive into the review!

First Impressions – Unboxing

When the tripod arrived, I was pleasantly surprised by the neat packaging, which included a box and a tripod case. I received the Carbon Edition, and it looked really well-built right from the start. Quite sturdy I should say because adjusting the leg locks was a bit of a challenge at first, as they were tight, and I wasn’t sure which way to turn them, but this one is on me. However, after the initial setback, I managed to set it up properly and was pleasantly surprised.

By the way, unlike many boxed items you buy online, especially if they have rubber or metal or whatnot, this one did not smell bad or strong. I don’t know why I said that, but many of the “cheap” stuff I bought from Amazon or anywhere else online had a distinct fresh-from-the-factory kind of smell that I didn’t like, and my SANDMARC tripod didn’t have that, so it left an impression on me.

Moving on…

Design and Build Quality

SANDMARC Quality Product

The tripod’s compact design is one of its strongest points. Despite its small size, it can extend to a height of around 161cm, making it a versatile companion for both my iPhone and mirrorless camera.

However, due to its compactness and engineering, it takes a couple of minutes to set it up, especially if you want to achieve its full height. But once you get the hang of it, it becomes a breeze.

The Carbon Edition’s build quality is truly impressive. The carbon fiber material makes it both lightweight and sturdy, ensuring that it can withstand various shooting environments. I couldn’t go out this week because of spring rain, so I decided to just take photos of the tripod at home.

I did go out to try and wait for the drizzle to stop, but it didn’t. But one thing I could say is the trains were packed, but carrying this tripod inside a cramped train did not bother anyone at all. It is compact and lightweight to carry.

And in case you will ask, the material for the case is topnotch. I’m not an expert when it comes to textiles, but I can tell that it is of high quality.

Performance and Ease of Use

SANDMARC Full Tripod

Once I overcame the initial challenge of setting up the tripod, I found it to be extremely user-friendly. The pro-level ball head allows for quick and seamless adjustments between portrait and landscape orientations, which is a game-changer for me – and I’m saying this as a hobbyist, not as a professional, just to remind you.

It also holds my iPhone SE2 and Sony a6400 securely without any wobbling, giving me confidence in its stability. For a while, I actually tried to put pressure on it to see if it would suddenly drop, but thankfully it withstood my stress testing.

SANDMARC Landscape

Customer Reviews and Feedback

Of course, as with any other sane person who’s shopping online, I did my digging as well. I checked reviews from real people before deciding to give it a shot. The reviews were stellar, so here we are now.

Easy to say, I wasn’t the only one impressed by the SANDMARC iPhone Tripod. Many customers praised its build quality, versatility, and ease of use. They also appreciated the excellent customer service from the SANDMARCteam. I’m yet to actually test their customer service since I haven’t encountered any issues at all – which is a +1 point to them.

SANDMARC Leg Locks

However, some users did mention the lack of clear instructions for setting up the tripod and adjusting the leg-locking system – if you’ll recall, I also mentioned this above, and it took me a few minutes to figure it out and find ease in adjusting the legs. But despite this minor drawback, the overall sentiment towards the product was overwhelmingly positive.

Compatibility and Accessories

SANDMARC Arca Swiss Plate

An advantage of the iPhone Tripod is its compatibility with not only iPhones but also Android phones and DSLR/Mirrorless Cameras. This makes it a versatile choice for those who, like me, use multiple devices for photography.

SANDMARC iPhone Mount

The tripod comes with a ball head, Arca-Swiss Plate, and iPhone mount, providing you with everything you need to get started.

SANDMARC Ballhead

Pros and Cons

The tripod in itself has a really good quality. I tried pulling and bending it here and there just to stress test it, to see if it would become loose or start creaking, but it withstood all of that.

The overall design is sleek as well, perfect for the modern on-the-go traveler.

The weight is perfect at 2.28 lbs (1.03 kg), height can go as low as 15.35 inches (39 cm) and up to 63.4 inches (161.1 cm).

And talking about height, at its maximum, you would think that a slender-looking tripod would start to shake or waver a little, especially with the wind, and when carrying a 4kg+ load, but its stability is really good as far as I could tell.

Next point might be a pro or con, depending on how you would interpret it, but the locks and leg locks can be stiff sometimes – which tells me a couple of things: first is that it is pretty much stable, it won’t suddenly drop on me while my gear is attached to it, and second is it is a testament to its quality. However, this could also be interpreted as, as time goes by and as I keep on using it, it might start to naturally loosen – but this is just me thinking out loud. The grip is strong since it’s new, but how long will it last?

I will try to reach out to SANDMARC about that last concern and update you here when they have an answer.

The biggest and perhaps only negative thing I could say about it is, and I’ve mentioned it twice above already, the leg locks.

I didn’t know how to operate the leg locks at first. There are a total of 3 locks on each leg, so turning and twisting it around took me a while to figure out which directions they go. But once that’s all setup, everything is good.

And because of the nature of the leg locks, setting it up takes longer than usual – but hey, it shouldn’t matter if you’re setting up a tripod since it only means you will stay on one spot for a long time. ;)

Honestly, aside from that, all I can think of are the positives of having SANDMARC’s iPhone Tripod, Carbon Edition. I can see myself using this for several years to come.

Specs by Edition

Here’s a table for a quick comparison between the three variants they offer, in case you’d like to try one.

Model Material Maximum Height Minimum Height Leg Sections Weight Capacity Weight
Tripod – Compact Edition Aluminum 25 inches (63.5 cm) 8.5 inches (21.6 cm) 4 Sections 6.5 lbs (3 kg) 1.65 lbs (751 g)
Tripod – Pro Edition Aluminum 63.4 inches (161.1 cm) 15.35 inches (39 cm) 4 Sections 13.23 lbs (6 kg) 2.63 lbs (1.19 kg)
Tripod – Carbon Edition Carbon Fiber 63.4 inches (161.1 cm) 15.35 inches (39 cm) 4 Sections 13.23 lbs (6 kg) 2.28 lbs (1.03 kg)

Conclusion

In conclusion, the SANDMARC iPhone Tripod has been a fantastic addition to my photography gear. Its compact design, lightweight build, and versatility make it an ideal choice for hobbyist photographers who are always on the go. Although the setup process can be a bit challenging initially, it’s worth the effort for the stability and ease of use it provides.

If you’re in the market for a tripod that can handle both mobile and DSLR/Mirrorless cameras, I highly recommend giving the SANDMARC’s iPhone Tripod a try. It’s a reliable companion that will level up your photography game and help you capture stunning shots in various environments.

How long do computers last before upgrading, and what signs should you look for before upgrading your system? Let’s explore these and related questions together, starting with the main one: how long do computers really last?

How long do computers last?

Honestly, the answer depends on many factors, but let’s start with assuming you have service-able equipment from a reputable manufacturer. Based on that, what kind of longevity can you expect from a computer? The answer will depend on your ability to maintain your computer over an extended period.

This is easier to do with a desktop computer than with a laptop, as it is much more difficult to thoroughly remove dust from a laptop or perform activities such as replacing the thermal paste, which eventually always becomes necessary.

pc hardware
Source: Max Pixel

With proper maintenance, ensuring a PC lasts longer than five years is a reasonable goal, and can be brought up to the ten-year mark. Many businesses and consumers have already figured this out, especially with equipment that is easier to extend, such as server PCs.

However, most PC components expire in five years or sooner, so you still shouldn’t expect much support if you extend your equipment’s life beyond its warranty period.

Let’s talk about another reason you’ll be inclined to upgrade – hardware obsolescence.

New computer or new hardware?

When talking about upgrading, do you mean buying a new computer or replacing individual components? The answer to that question will depend on several different factors, namely the age of the computer you’re dealing with and the exact nature of your problem.

For example, if your only real problem is a graphics bottleneck, and your motherboard supports at least PCI Express 3.0, you probably don’t need to upgrade your entire system to fix it – just install a new graphics processor and perhaps an accompanying power supply.

Even the integrated graphics can be surprisingly effective for most workloads. However, you may be prompted to upgrade your entire system if you encounter various problems.

Using outdated processor generations or RAM standards (e.g., DDR3 vs. today’s DDR4 and DDR5) is a good reason to completely upgrade your system, as is opting for the latest PCI Express and related NVMe standards. Of course, you may have a computer that doesn’t work very well and is unlikely to last longer – if it works at all.

In that case, despite all attempts to fix or replace the problematic components, buying a brand-new computer is certainly a smart move. CPU performance upgrades that will require replacing your motherboard (new socket) and RAM (a different generation of DDR) are when it makes sense to upgrade your entire computer.

So whether you need a complete PC upgrade or just a hardware upgrade to your existing PC will depend on your needs and your own judgment.

Signs that you may need to upgrade your PC

1. Unable to upgrade to the latest version of the OS

As it turns out, not every computer is designed to use multiple generations of operating systems. A Windows XP computer will start to feel a little uncomfortable when you run Windows 7 on it, even if 7 still works better than Windows Vista.

slow update computer
Source: K. Latham

As the operating system evolves, so does the PC hardware, and the former builds around the latter. Many inherent features are hidden behind hardware improvements that simply can’t be obtained without upgrading your existing computer.

For this reason, you may not be able to upgrade your operating system. The current prime example is Windows 11 with its TPM 2.0 requirements.

The trusted platform module is essentially an embedded hardware chip that is used to encrypt and verify security code. It is hardware isolated from the rest of the PC and, in theory, should make the entire system more secure, especially against things like rootkits and ransomware. However, such features must be built into the existing motherboard.

While TPM 2.0 is present in many modern motherboards, it is not present in all of them, and it may not be present on PCs built for older operating systems such as Windows 10 or Windows 8. If your workload requires Windows 11 for any reason, that might be a good reason to upgrade your hardware completely.

However, that – by itself – would not make me recommend a system upgrade. Especially if your computer works well with Windows 10, Windows 7 or a modern Linux distribution, the inability to replace the OS is not that important.

2. Slow boot

Over time and as your storage capacity starts to fill up, your operating system boot time will increase, especially on older HDDs. At times like these, you may need to upgrade to an SSD drive – even if your system doesn’t support the latest NVMe and SATA SSDs, you can get a significant performance boost over SATA HDDs, even using the same cable.

Before you spend money on new hardware, however, it’s important to take a few preliminary steps. While an SSD drive will undoubtedly improve your performance, you can still see improvements by taking steps such as resetting Windows or enabling fast boot in the BIOS.

3. Visible “stuttering”

If you notice that your computer is experiencing severe glitches with regular use, such as your mouse input interrupting for a few seconds or Windows freezing, you may be seeing symptoms of a more serious problem.

More often than not, such problems are caused by insufficient system storage or system overheating.

 • If you notice that your drive is at capacity limits, storage is most likely the cause of the failure.
 • If you’re not able to free up a significant amount of storage space, it’s definitely time to consider upgrading your storage – either a high-capacity HDD drive (2TB or higher) or a solid-state drive, depending on what you need to store.
 • If it’s just for media use, not editing or gaming, adding an HDD should be enough!
 • If storage isn’t the problem, it’s time to tackle the cooling. When was the last time you cleaned your computer or replaced your CPU’s thermal paste?

In case you’re confident that you don’t have any heat-trotting, it might just be time to upgrade. As a last resort, you may want to consider replacing your power supply and/or RAM – be sure to use something like memtest86 to test your RAM.

4. Too noisy computer

An overly noisy computer can be especially distracting during long work hours or when you’re trying to stay focused while playing games. It can also be a problem even for people with whom you communicate by voice, depending on the location of the microphone and sound settings.

The process and cost of repairing a noisy PC usually depend on which parts are responsible, but an easy way to make a quieter computer that will almost always work is to invest in the right case fans. Most of the fans that come with off-the-shelf PCs or are included are not capable of delivering high performance or staying quiet enough.

slow game loading

Choosing your own replacement case fans is an inexpensive way to improve both the overall thermal performance and acoustics of your PC. Fans aren’t the only source of noise in your PC. You may also be dealing with noisy hard drives or a whistling coil.

A noisy HDD is a sign of an aging drive, and clicking noises indicate a potential drive failure. Meanwhile, coil components make noise when large amounts of energy pass through them, causing them to vibrate loudly enough to make a hum or squeak. Despite its name, coil whistling can sound completely different depending on the severity and component, but the best way to distinguish it from normal fan noise by ear is to simply distinguish its source from your case fans.

5. Slow game loading

If you’re a gamer, it’s hard to overstate the impact of storage speed on your experience. Slow storage can add full minutes to your load time, which only takes a few seconds with NVMe storage. In addition, the latest games are built with SSDs as a base-level focus, which actually requires SSDs to load game resources into a memory fast enough.

If you notice that loading times are taking longer than they should (for example, if you never get the first pick in your chosen MOBA) or resources are often still loading higher quality versions in the middle of gameplay, it’s probably time to upgrade to an SSD.

6. Visual artifacts

Artifacts can appear in many forms but are usually visual glitches produced by your graphics processor. This can happen for a variety of reasons, but the problem will most likely be due to bad drivers, unstable overclocking, or even a failed GPU. Before you start replacing a video card that is otherwise serving you well, be sure to do a clean driver reinstallation.

If that doesn’t solve the problem, then yes: it’s definitely time to consider buying a new graphics card. As a last resort (if you assume the video card is having a temperature problem), you can try to save your existing video card by taking it apart and updating the thermal paste.

7. Running out of storage space

Running out of storage space and finding that your attempts at cleaning your downloads folder, deleting unused files, etc. don’t give you enough storage space? You should consider upgrading your storage, but what kind of storage upgrade will depend on which files you’re running out of space for.

If you don’t have enough storage on built-in media that isn’t used for heavy editing, a standard HDD drive for your desktop PC will do just fine. Although HDDs are much slower than SSDs, the ~150 MB/s bandwidth of a desktop hard drive is more than enough for media storage and consumption. Even a 4K HDR video file should normally play from an HDD drive, as the bitrate of this content rarely exceeds 12 MB/s (or about 80 Mbps).

As long as you don’t actively need to edit high-resolution footage, a desktop HDD drive will be more than enough. Same for basic photo editing. If you’re short on space for editing or rendering projects and gaming, you might want to consider an SSD.

Even SATA SSDs will provide great value when loading games, editing high-resolution content, or otherwise managing large files. Of course, NVMe SSDs can offer additional enhancements for these workloads.

8. Inability to achieve/maintain consistent frame rates in games

If you’re playing games and find that you can’t maintain consistent performance, an outdated or poorly maintained computer may be the likely culprit. For games that are simply too intense for your current hardware, the only real solution is to upgrade your graphics processor.

Fortunately, as long as your CPU hasn’t become a bottleneck preventing you from reaching 60 frames per second, a discrete graphics processor upgrade is a fairly easy way to improve game performance.

If your current system is unable to support 60fps in your games due to a bottleneck in the graphics processor, a graphics processor upgrade should solve the problem quite easily.

In the end, if you need your device repaired – anything from dealing with a PC power supply to laptop motherboard replacement – it is always a good decision to choose the best professionals available.

Like any computer, your laptop has a limited lifespan. And it does not matter how well you look after the thing. Eventually, it won’t be able to keep up to date with the latest software updates anymore, the interface will become too clunky, or the hardware itself will die.

When this happens, most people will simply get a new device and leave their once-treasured possession to gather dust. But your old laptop might not be as dead and useless as you thought. So long as it is still booting, there are many things you can do with it to get more life out of it yet. You might not have to buy a replacement at all.

Intrigued? Then take a look at the following five fun ways you can reuse your old laptop today.

Use Your Laptop for Network Attached Storage

Your laptop might not have the Ram and processing power you need anymore. But there is no need to let any storage space you have on there go to waste either, especially if it’s got a decent hard drive. Instead, you can use it as Network-attached Storage (NAS) by installing specialist software such as TrueNas Core.

reuse old laptop

If you’re unfamiliar with the concept, NAS essentially involves connecting a drive to your home network and making it accessible to all your devices. So, in this case, instead of filling the storage of your tablets, mobiles, and other devices, you can store them on your old laptop while retaining access. You can think of it as having your own personal cloud storage without the reliance on third parties.

Revive Your Laptop With Linux

How does the idea of getting your laptop working just as well as before sound? Only with a fast-booting, virus-resistant, and capable OS installed that can run almost any program you could ever need? Well, it might be time to give Linux a try.

run linux on old laptop

In case you didn’t know, Linux is a family of popular open-source operating systems that are typically easy to install, configure and use. What’s more, even the more feature-heavy versions (or distros) of Linux are incredibly lightweight. And some flavors of Linux, such as AntiX, Linux Lite, or Tiny Core, are even more lightweight still. So unless your laptop is ancient, you can likely get the system to work.

Turn Your Laptop Into a Chromebook

Is Linux not your style? You could always go down the Chrome OS Flex route instead and turn your laptop into a Chromebook device. You won’t have as many features as before, but you will have a lightweight system with a snappy, simplified interface. It is a brilliant choice if you are only looking to run a browser and some web apps.

Note that you are unlikely to get anything too old (anything pre-2010 is unlikely to be compatible anymore) to work. And you will need at least 4GB of RAM. But if your laptop still meets the requirements, the results are well worth the minimal effort.

Create a Retro Gaming Machine

Miss playing your favorite old games? Another fun way to reuse your old laptop is to turn it into a dedicated retro gaming environment. And it won’t take up the same amount of room or cost as much as hunting down the original hardware and gear.

Turning your device into a retro gaming machine is as simple as finding and downloading the emulation software of your choice, be it for playing old Nintendo or Sega games.

However, if you really want to complete the experience, get yourself a gaming controller or joystick. You can even find one of the many controllers tailored to look and feel like the originals.

Gift It to the Kids

Even if your computer is no longer up to browsing the web or utilizing newer programs, it can still serve as an excellent digital playground for younger kids. Indeed, it might even be the perfect gift to not only keep them occupied but to help to teach them about computers. And if nothing else, it will keep them off your actual gadgets.

The important thing here is to ensure that there is nothing on your laptop that might be inappropriate for minors, which a simple factory will likely guarantee. You’ll also want to install safeguards or remove access to their ability to access the internet entirely.

From there, it’s a matter of loading up the machine with fun and educational content, such as various games, graphic editors, and anything else that may inspire their creativity.

Worse Case: Trade, Sell, Donate or Recycle

Hopefully, this list has inspired you to revitalize your laptop in some manner. But if you still feel like your machine is useless, it may be time to part with your computer. But that does not mean you should throw it in the garbage.

For starters, you might be able to earn some cash from selling your machine. Since even if no one else wants the computer, many collectors and refurbishes may be happy to pay for the parts inside, especially if they’re hard to get elsewhere.

Another option is to donate your laptop to a non-profit. Otherwise, getting it recycled is likely the best bet. Just remember to wipe any data before taking any of these actions. Otherwise, it may end up in the wrong hands.

USB drives are a simple and convenient way to move files between devices, but they can pose risks. Unlike email-delivered viruses, where you typically have to click a link to download anything, USB-delivered malware can infect your computer the moment you plug a flash drive in.

Removable media like USB sticks are responsible for 9% of all security incidents, the second-most of any attack vector. That number goes up to 20% when you don’t include incidents involving cloud services. That’s a lot of attacks, so how can you ensure your USB isn’t compromised? Start with these five steps.

Secure Your PC From Infected Thumb Drives: Tips & Tools

Secure Your PC From Infected Thumb Drives: Tips & Tools

A thumb drive or flash drive — is the most common portable data storage device. However, it can... Read more

1. Avoid using unknown USB drives

The best way to avoid infected USB devices is not to use any you don’t recognize. If someone gives you a flash drive or you find one in the wild, assume it’s unsafe and don’t plug it into your computer.

unknown USB

Handing out infected flash drives or leaving them for curious passers-by is a common social engineering technique that takes advantage of human weaknesses like curiosity. It plays a role in 90% of security breaches because it’s so effective. People are naturally curious, and if a shiny new USB sits on the ground, they’ll want to know what’s on it.

Avoid caving to that temptation if you want to stay safe. There’s no way to tell where that drive came from or what it was plugged into before, so the risks outweigh any interesting things you might find.

2. Run Linux from a safe USB drive

You may not have an old or backup computer lying around. If that’s the case, you can protect your files from a potentially compromised USB by running Linux off a different flash drive. Opening the suspicious USB in Linux will provide a barrier between any malware and your normal operating system.

Linux is free to download and can run off a flash drive. Find a distribution, often called a distro, with a large support community like Ubuntu, then download it to a USB you know is safe. Follow the installation guide to run this new OS from your flash drive.

3. Use an old (or unimportant) computer

Your personal USB drives can get infected, too, so you need to know how to check them for malware. If you’re suspicious and want to know more, find an old computer or one you don’t use for anything important. Use this to check the drive instead of your main computer.

old laptop

Malware won’t be a big issue if your USB is infected but you plug it into a computer with no personal information or sensitive files. However, you must be sure there’s nothing a hacker would find valuable on your device.

Erase any important files or personal information and disconnect the computer from the Internet before plugging anything in.

4. Plug it in, scan it

Once you’ve followed these other steps, it’s time to check your USB. Run Linux if you’re going that route, disconnect your computer from the Internet and open your antivirus software. Then, plug the USB drive in.

Use your anti-malware software to scan the drive. That process will look different depending on what software you use, but there should be clear instructions from the program’s main menu. If your antivirus doesn’t find anything, your USB is probably safe and you can use it normally.

5. Disable Autorun and use an Anti-malware app

Another step to take before plugging the suspicious USB in is disabling Autorun. As the name implies, this feature automatically runs external media like flash drives, which is how malware often infects your computer from a USB. You’ll want to disable it to safely check your drive for viruses.

anti-virus

You’ll also need to install anti-malware software if you don’t have any already. Even if you do, check for updates to ensure you can scan for the latest threats. It’s a good idea to update all your other software while you’re at it to be as safe as possible.

What to do with a compromised USB drive?

If your antivirus software finds an issue, you’ll have to remove it from your drive. The program will likely let you automatically delete infected files, which is the safest way forward. Once you’ve taken care of the suspicious files, restart your computer and follow these steps again to ensure you’ve removed the malware.

If you want to be as safe as possible, it’s best not to use that USB drive again, even after removing the infected malware. Keeping backups of all important files in the cloud will let you discard these devices without worrying about losing the stuff you want.

It’s also a good idea to keep your online credentials on check to catch if anything slipped through the cracks. You can check the Have I Been Pwned website to see if someone got hold of your credentials and watch your bank account and social media channels for suspicious activity.

You should also use a password manager, change all your passwords and run frequent virus scans on your computer.

We all know that the official prices of Apple products are pretty much fixed; they are as accurate as announced or whatever you see on the official Apple.com page. But did you know that, even if that’s the case, you can still purchase Apple products (iPad, iPhone, or even the Mac, for example) at a better bargain price depending on the country you visit?

Well, yes, you can.

Buying Apple products in Asia

In this post, we aim to show you the common Apple products and their prices in various countries in Asia. We’ll also compare to see if they are cheaper and, if so, by how much.

Can Apple Products Really Be Cheaper?

Short answer: Yes. But it depends greatly on what you are purchasing, the local currency exchange rate with the USD, and the amount of tax return you receive as a tourist.

Take the MacBook Air 13″ M1 as an example. Its official listed price is USD $999. Now, if you were to buy it in Thailand, for instance, it would cost you ฿34,900. If you convert that back to USD, it amounts to USD $961. As you can see, it’s already slightly cheaper.

Additionally, there’s the tax refund for tourists. In Thailand’s case, it’s 7%. So, with all these factors taken into consideration, the MacBook Air 13″ M1, originally priced at USD $999, can be as low as ฿32,457, or $894, giving you a potential discount of roughly 10%.

How Do We Compare?

Before we present you with all the tables, numbers, and comparisons, here’s an explanation of the factors we considered during the comparison.

First, we take the official price of the products from Apple.com, which is in USD, and compare it to the official price of the product in its local currency. Using the latest currency exchange rates, we then identify the differences. From this, you’ll already get an idea if you can secure a better deal based solely on the currency exchange rate.

Are you having problems with your laptop battery? Is it not charging like it used to? If so, don’t panic – you are not alone. Many people experience this problem ever so often. In this blog post, I will discuss five of the most common ways to fix a laptop battery that is not charging. Hopefully, one of these methods will work for you!

I will also provide some helpful tips on how to prevent this from happening in the future. Let’s get started!

8 Ways to Improve Windows’ Battery Life

8 Ways to Improve Windows’ Battery Life

Like its predecessors, Windows 10 also comes with a bunch of features to increase battery timing, including a... Read more

Quick Fixes

Before getting into more technical solutions, let us first, try these quick fixes and see if this helps solving the problem.

 1. Make sure that the laptop battery is tightly seated into its slot.
 2. Check to see whether you have tightly plugged the charger cable into the charger port as shown in the screenshot below.
 3. loose cable
 4. Check if you have connected the charging cable to the right port on your laptop. Modern laptops come with two or more USB-C ports that look the same. But one is for charging and the other is for data transfer. If you plug the charger into the data transfer port, your laptop might not be charged.
 5. Shut down your laptop and remove the battery (if your laptop has a removable battery). Clean the dirt from the battery compartment and power jack with a dry cloth. Wait for a minute or so, and then put the battery in its position again. Turn the laptop on and see if this resolves the issue.

If none of the above quick fixes work, below are some more detailed solutions to fix this issue.

1. Check the wall socket

First, check and see if you have plugged the charger properly into the wall socket. There’s no hope in charging a laptop that is not connected to a power source, so be sure to double-check that it is plugged in tightly.

If you have connected the charger properly, then check the wall socket. For this, remove the charger and plug it into some other socket. If this solves the issue, your previous wall socket has an issue.

2. Inspect your battery

The laptop battery is responsible for providing power and charge. If your laptop is not charging, there might be a problem within your battery.

To inspect your battery:

 1. Turn off the laptop and remove the battery.
 2. If the battery is non-removable, remove the laptop’s back cover. Now open the battery screws and remove them.
 3. With the battery detached from the laptop, press and hold the Power button for 20 seconds. It will remove the remaining charge from the laptop.
 4. Now plug the charger into the wall socket. If the laptop starts and receives the power, it means the charger is working fine and the battery is faulty.

3. Inspect your charger

Sometimes, the problem could lie with the battery or the charger might be the culprit. If your laptop isn’t charging, you should inspect your laptop charger for any possible issue with it.

To inspect your charger, try using another charger. If it works, then it’s a no-brainer that your current charger is the culprit.

To inspect the charger cable, look at the charger cable for damage all along its length. If any part of the cable is bulgy or if you notice a burning smell from the cable or adaptor, it indicates that the charger cable is burned out from inside.

4. Inspect the charging port and battery jack

Remove any dirt from the charging port with the help of a blower. If the charging port seems loose and the charger cable won’t fit in it firmly, there’s a chance that your power jack has been damaged or broken from the inside of the motherboard. You should consult a laptop technician in this case.

Sometimes a faulty battery jack also causes the battery to not charge. To inspect the battery jack, turn off the laptop and remove the battery. Clean any dirt from the battery jack. If it’s loose, go to the repair shop to fix it.

5. Inspect battery health

All the lithium-ion batteries have a certain life span and they wear out after a certain time.

To allow you to fully examine the laptop hardware, many modern laptop OEMs, such as HP, Dell, Lenovo, ASUS, and others include device diagnosis software.

If you are using an old laptop, follow the below steps to examine the battery health:

 1. Go to Start and type powershell. Click Run as Administrator on the right side.
 2. run as administrator
 3. In the PowerShell window, type powercfg /batteryreport /output "C:\battery-report.html (including the inverted commas).
 4. powershell
 5. The Windows PowerShell will generate a battery report in .html file format and save it to the C drive on your laptop.
 6. battery report
 7. Now open the C drive and click the battery-report file.

This report shows the details of your laptop’s battery usage, a prediction regarding its remaining life based on previous charges, and other data.

It also includes the remaining cycles count of the battery. If the battery report indicates deterioration or shows the cycles count exceeding its limit, it’s time to replace the battery.

6. Check for overheating laptop

Overheating, like all other electronics, has a bad effect on batteries. If your laptop is overheating, it’s possible that the battery is becoming warm and causing damage.

The charging system may malfunction as a result of the battery sensor misfiring, falsely indicating that the battery is either entirely charged or completely discharged, resulting in the problems.

You may also discover that your system shuts down to prevent overheating and resulting in a fire. If the battery is heating up, shut down the laptop for a few minutes. When the laptop cools down, start it again.

7. Run the power troubleshooter

The power troubleshooter aids in detecting issues caused by any fault with the power supply. If your laptop is having issues with power consumption, you may benefit from learning how to use the Windows 10 Power troubleshooter.

To run the Power Troubleshooter:

 1. Press Windows key + I. Go to Update & security.
 2. troubleshoot
 3. Click Troubleshoot in the left pane. In the right pane, click Additional troubleshooters.
 4. update and security
 5. Now select Power from the options and click Run the troubleshooter. The troubleshooter will start detecting any issue related to the power supply.
 6. run the troubleshooter
 7. The Power troubleshooter provides an analysis of the problem after the scanning. The Troubleshooter will most likely fix any issues with the power supply. However, in a few circumstances, it may provide some suggestions.

If there are any Power troubleshooting instructions, follow them.

Conclusion

In this article, I have discussed solutions to the laptop battery charging issue. In most cases, the quick fixes work for most users.

Different users encounter different issues. Sometimes, there may be a battery health issue, a charger cable burn out or an issue in the charger port.

When you’ve done all of your research and attempted every possible troubleshooting tip and trick, your last best option is to seek expert help. Take your laptop to a trusted repair shop for further detailed troubleshooting.
