Comment on The Instructional Programs and Curriculum are Fatally Flawed by Carla https://theeducatorsroom.com/the-instructional-programs-and-curriculum-are-fatally-flawed/#comment-189745 Sat, 12 Oct 2024 19:33:29 +0000 https://theeducatorsroom.com/?p=35963#comment-189745 ARC is horrible. Im used to Wonders which I thought was fantastic. My students are all new immigrants and no zero english. I usually have them reading and writing in English by April. This is forcing me to alternate between languages without repeating any sounds or letters or words in the other language. My coach said…repetition doesn’t work. Ok. The reading material contains words like specimen molecules archeology and synthesis. My students are still learning to write their names and they’re expected to begin writing their responses to scientific texts in 3 weeks. When this horrible program fails, they will say, we spent all these millions and sent these teachers all these materials and they still couldnt teach these kids to read and write. If you let use my years of experience to teach my students, I promise you they will learn!! Just let me do my damn job! Teachers are the only professionals whose expertise and experience mean nothing.

As a teacher, I’ve found that active, student-centered methods lead to more engaged and motivated learners. Your ideas on collaborative exercises are great, and I’m excited to try implementing more of them in my classroom. Thank you for the inspiration!

An extension of the topic about addressing intellectual property is important when a teacher writes a curriculum for a new subject area. If that curriculum is approved, can another teacher use it without the district making sure that teacher is actually teaching what is in that curriculum? This happens in the arts, when one teacher writes curriculum in dance, theatre, or another art, but who is only claiming they are teaching an advanced curriculum. I cannot see it happening in another subject, but it happens too often in the arts or vocational ed.
